Art Detroit Now

This weekend, visit the outdoor art environment of The Heidelberg Project, along with many other galleries participating in the Art Detroit Now gallery crawl, organized to "celebrate the great contemporary art and artists in our community."

Notable Book Tour in Morenci, MI

Tyree & Jenenne recently stopped in Morenci, MI to promote "Connecting the Dots" on the Michigan Notable Books Tour.

The people of Morenci (population approx. 2,500) extended a warm welcome to The Heidelberg Project, spending weeks preparing for the visit. They also created many works of art emulating Tyree's artwork, such as "Faces in the Hood" style self-portraits, polka-dot painted shoes, recycled material sculptures, and polka-dot bookmarks.

Summer Festival Help!

The HP is seeking volunteers for the yet-to-be-named biannual summer festival on August 23rd.

We will need some general volunteers/docents for the summer, (and festival volunteers for at least one month prior to the festival).

We are also seeking people involved in marketing and graphic design who would be interested in contributing by helping to create festival flyers and marketing material.

YAH Volunteers Needed

YAH is seeking volunteers for June-July for a Comic Book Project with kids.

The training dates are as follows:

All at Franklin Wright Settlements, 3360 Charlevoix, Detroit, MI 48207
Wednesday, June 18, 6-8pm
Monday, June 30th 6-8pm
July 8th, 6-8pm (review and preparation)

Connect the Dots: Ross-Hill Academy

The Connect the Dots program continued today as we had our second orientation meeting, this time with the teachers and staff at Ross-Hill Academy, just several blocks away from the Heidelberg Project.

Once again everyone at the school is very excited about our partnership program with Provo Craft and can't wait to receive the Cricut Expressions cutting machine available to help students get creative with projects and facilitate teaching methods.

Connect the Dots: The Heidelberg Project and Provo Craft partnership program, is under way!

We will be partnering with Provo Craft to bring a great educational art program as well as gifts of art supplies, including a Cricut cutting machine, to six Detroit schools.

Today we met with teachers at Gesu Catholic School. The response was overwhelmingly positive and everyone is very excited to get this program up and running!

The initial presentation consists of a half-hour on the Heidelberg Project presented by Jenenne Whitfield, a half-hour segment on the Cricut cutting machine and supplies by Sarah Hodsdon, and a Q&A session and hands-on demonstration for the staff.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ASAP!

The Heidelberg Project has partnered with Provo Craft to bring an exciting six-part educational art program to six Detroit elementary schools. The schools will be provided with a new Cricut Expressions cutting machine, which we will be teaching the staff and students to use during the program, which will also teach them about the Heidelberg Project.

We are seeking committed volunteers to lead the programs at these schools. You must be available at least one day a week during school hours. Each volunteer will be scheduling individually with their chosen school, and you will receive a stipend for your participation. Originally this was a plan for 6 separate sessions, but they may be condensed to fit more than one lesson into each session.

Anyone interested in committing to this program should come to our orientation meeting on Saturday, April 5th at 11am. You will be given a free demonstration and hands-on experience using the Cricut machine, and complete the 6-part project that you will be helping the children to create during the program. Dress in preparation of getting a bit messy with art supplies. Lunch will also be served. There is no specific end time; we will be done when we are finished with our projects sometime in the afternoon.

Please respond by the end of the day on Thursday, April 3rd if you will be attending the orientation meeting. We will take the first 10 volunteers for this program. We hope you will consider being a part of this exciting initiative.

The HP is going to need some tour guides for the 2008 season, and we will have other volunteer opportunities coming up as well.

If you're interested in getting trained as a tour guide and/or other volunteer, please let me know your availability.

Tours are generally scheduled to start between 10am and 2pm and last for 2 hours.

Upcoming Lecture!

Tyree and Jenenne will be giving a lecture this coming Monday to coincide with the exhibition of Street Sense at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum at Saginaw Valley State University.

Tyree Guyton and Heidelberg Project Director Jenenne Whitfield will give a lecture about The Heidelberg Project in SVSU’s Rhea Miller Recital Hall Monday, March 24 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to this free lecture to hear the perspectives of the artist about the Heidelberg Project and its implications for understanding the role of art in society. Attendees will also have an opportunity to respond, ask questions, and lend their comments.

YAH Open House!

The Young Association of Heidelberg is hosting an open house this coming weekend, providing an opportunity to learn more about the organization, meet members, and join us in our mission "to expand the goals of the Heidelberg Project by actively engaging young people, ages 18 to 30, in social, educational and philanthropic initiatives."

Street Sense exhibition at SVSU!

Street Sense: Celebrating 20 Years of the Heidelberg Project, exhibited at Wayne State University last fall, is now at the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum at Saginaw Valley State University.

The exhibition runs Feb 8th - May 24th. A lecture given by Tyree & Jenenne is scheduled for Monday, March 24th at 7pm at the Rhea Miller Recital Hall at SVSU.
